I love to read murder mysteries. And if I can get to the BIG REVEAL before I have figured out the “who” I am in awe of the author who was clever enough to keep me in suspense until the very end. But, just as important as the “who” is the “why.” There again, if the author has kept that secret from me until the end as well, I often hear myself saying “Kudos!” as I close the book. Then I look for another book by that author. Will it be another William Kent Krueger, or will it be a Christine Husom book?
Most of you probably know the books by William Kent Krueger, but if you’re not familiar with Christine Husom’s books, I’d like to introduce you to her.
A Minnesota author, Christine has eight Winnebago County Mystery books in her series with the ninth book in the works. She has also written three cozy mysteries in her Snow Globe series. (www.christinehusom.com)
As a former Corrections Officer and Deputy Sheriff at her local county sheriff’s department, Christine often draws from events that happened while she was part of the Sheriff’s office. In the Winnebago mystery series, her protagonist is a female Sgt. nick-named “Corky” who works with a male detective they call “Smoke.” Together they flush out the killer while their relationship ebbs and flows throughout the series.
Christine juggles her writing life with her family life of husband, four adult children, and seven grandchildren along with her many responsibilities as County Commissioner for the past eight years. She says, “I don’t have a regular writing schedule, but I often think of my recurring characters and what they’re up to. Before I put words on a page, a criminal activity forms in my mind and I loosely create a plot and subplot around that. I imagine characters in scenes and immerse myself into those scenes. When I sit down to write, I know my antagonist, the beginning, the end, and a few key plot points.”
Christine was recently the first guest host on KRWC’s new Radio Book Club to be aired at 10:10 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month. She recommended my book, Fatal Flaws, as the book for the next show. I will be the next guest host, along with host Tim Matthews, on the November 19th show when you will be able to ask me questions or make comments about the book. In addition, at the end of the show, a drawing will be held for a gift certificate from coffee shop In Hot Water and a free signed copy of my book Fatal Flaws. To participate in the book club and qualify for the drawing, sign up at KRWC1360.com.
Do you read mysteries? Why? Who is your favorite mystery writer? Have you read any of Christine Husom’s books? Can you recommend a good mystery? I’d love to hear from you.
Fatal Flaws may be purchased at your local bookstore or at Amazon.com. Or you may request it at your local library. I look forward to hearing from you on the next radio book club show Thursday morning, November 19th. I hope you enjoy reading Fatal Flaws.
